Former-Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder David Beckham has announced that he will retire from football at the end of the current season.

The 38-year-old has just helped mega-rich PSG to their first Ligue One title in 19 years.

The French club were looking to offer Beckham an extension on his short-term deal, but Beckham believes that now is the right time for him to call time on his career.

Glorious

Beckham has enjoyed a glorious career. The veteran midfielder has become the first ever Englishman to win league titles in four different countries.

His first titles came during his time with Manchester United, followed by a La Liga title in his final season with Real Madrid.

A five year-stint in the American MLS produced two MLS Cup winners’ medals with LA Galaxy, before he moved to French club PSG at the end of last year and recently clinched the French title with the nouvre riche Parisian club.

Record

David Beckham holds the record number of caps for an outfield player for England, having played 115 times for England, captaining the Three Lions on 59 occasions. Only Peter Shilton on 125 caps has made more appearances for England.

Mixed

Beckham has enjoyed a mixed career of being a hero and villain with England fans especially. His sending-off during the 1998 World Cup against Argentina led to the midfielder being vilified by both opposition supporters and British media in the following months.

However, he bounced back to reclaim his status as a hero in 2001. The midfielder scored a last-gasp equaliser against Greece to give England a 2-2 draw and qualify the Three Lions for the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea.

Future

David Beckham has many interests outside of football, but has taken on an ambassador role with Sky and is also interested in promoting football in China. If Beckham’s football career is anything to go by whatever he does, he will be successful.
