Premier League — 18 August 2013

English Premier LeagueYesterday the Premier League 2013-2014 season officially started. As always there have been some surprises. In the opening match of the season Liverpool held tight to win 1-0 against Stoke. The match was quite balanced with Liverpool being slightly being the better side. The reds took the lead in the 37th minute thanks to Daniel Sturridge. In the 89th minute Stoke had a golden opportunity to draw the match level as they were awarded a penalty. New signing, Simon Mignolet, had something different in mind as he saved the penalty to secure the 3 points for the Anfield side. Arsenal started their season on a bad note as they lost 3-1 against Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium. The Londoners mad a good start as they opened the score in the sixth minute thanks to Oliver Giroud. Aston Villa managed to turn the score in their favor thanks to two penalties from Christian Benteke, scoring one from the rebound and one from the spot. In the 67 minute Arsenal had Koscielny sent off with Aston Villa taking full advantage of that incident by closing the match with a third goal by new signing Antonio Luna.

In another match Norwich and Everton finished level at 2-2. Norwich opened the score in the 51st minute through Whittaker but Everton overturned the score with two goals in five minutes from Barkley and Coleman. Norwich managed to level the match in the 71st minute through their star signing Ricky van Wolfswinkel. Sunderland vs Fulham and WBA vs Southampton both ended with 1-0 wins for the away sides. Fulham won the match with a goal in the 52nd minute by Kasami whilst Southampton found the winner in the 90th minute as England international, Rickie Lambert, scored from the penalty spot. West Ham won 2-0 against Cardiff with a goal in each half. It was Joe Cole that opened the score in the 13th minute whilst Kevin Nolan sealed the match in the 76th minute. In the last match of the day Manchester United managed a 4-1 against Swansea. After a balanced start to the match, Manchester United shocked Swansea by scoring two goals in three minutes before halftime with Robin Van Persie scoring the first one and Danny Welbeck the second one. In the second half Swansea tried to react by Manchester United scored a third goal through Van Persie. New Swansea signing, Bony Wilfried,closed the gap with a goal in the 82nd minute. Danny Wlbeck made the last mark on teh match as he scored the fourth goal for United in the 90th minute.
