England Premier League — 19 August 2012

Fulham and Swansea were the big winners on the opening day of the Premier League.

The Cottagers enjoyed a superb start to the season, with a 5-0 home victory over Norwich.

It was a debut to remember for Croatian striker Mladen Petric, as he netted twice.

Fulham’s other goals coming from Damien Duff, Alex Kacaniklic and a late penalty from midfielder Steve Sidwell. There was joy for new Swansea boss Michael Laudrup at QPR. The Swans hammered the home side 5-0.

Another Premier League debutant made a big impact at Loftus Road. Spanish midfielder Michu scored a superb brace. Winger Nathan Dyer also got a double and fellow winger Scott Sinclair completed the rout late on.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers endured a nightmare start to his Reds career. The Reds lost 3-0 at West Brom and also saw defender Daniel Agger sent-off.

The Baggies took the lead through a superb strike from Zoltan Gera. Striker Peter Odemwingie added a second from the penalty spot in the second half, new boy Romelu Lukaku marked his debut with a goal late-on to give the Baggies a memorable victory.

Premier League new-boys West Ham claimed a 1-0 home victory over Aston Villa on their return to the English top flight. The only goal of the game coming from midfielder Kevin Nolan just before half-time.

Reading and Stoke drew 1-1 at the Madejski Stadium. Debutant Michael Kightly fired Stoke into a first half lead. The home side claimed a point though with a last-gasp Adam Le Fondre penalty, after Dean Whitehead was dismissed for bringing down substitute Gareth McCleary in the penalty area.

Last season’s surprise package Newcastle started their season off with a 2-1 home victory over Tottenham. A goal from Demba Ba and a Hatem Ben Arfa penalty, were sandwiched in-between a Jermaine Defoe strike for the visitors.

Arsenal endured a frustrating first day of the season drawing 0-0 with Sunderland at the Emirates Stadium. Gunners fans will be further frustrated by the fact midfielder Alex Song is close to agreeing a move to Spanish giants Barcelona.
