Transfer News — 01 September 2012

Yesterday’s transfer deadline day saw a lot of activity from a number of English top flight clubs.

One of the busier clubs yesterday were champions Manchester City.

The Citizens completed the £16million signing of Spanish international midfielder Javi Garcia from Benfica.

City also brought in former-Everton keeper Richard Wright, on a free transfer. Wright capture was followed by the £12million signing of Serbia defender Matija Nastasic from Fiorentina. City defender Stefan Savic has moved in the opposite direction.

City’s highest profile signing was Brazilian full-back Maicon from Italian giants Inter. The 31 year-old has joined for an undisclosed fee. City also sold Dutch midfielder Nigel De Jong to AC Milan for an undisclosed fee.

Tottenham were very busy on transfer deadline day as well. Holland international midfielder Rafael Van Der Vaart has returned to the Bundesliga with Hamburg after a £10million move. The 29 year-old has been replaced by USA attacking midfielder Clint Dempsey, who joined Spurs from Fulham for £6million.

Spurs also completed the signing of French number one Hugo Lloris from Lyon. The French international cost the club in the region of £12million.

QPR were also busy on deadline day bringing in Esteban Granero from Real Madrid for an undisclosed fee and Stephane Mbia from Marseille also on an undisclosed fee. Hoops midfielder Joey Barton has moved in the opposite direction on a season-long loan.

Newly-promoted Southampton have paid a club record fee to sign Uruguayan winger Gaston Ramirez. The youngster joined the Saints in a £12million move from Bologna.

Fulham secured the £4million signing of Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov from  Manchester United. In what was a shock move Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien joined Spanish giants Real Madrid on a season-long loan deal.

Aston Villa completed the £7million signing of Genk striker Christian Benteke. The Villans also signed Crewe midfielder Ashley Westwood on deadline day.
