Leeds produced one of the biggest shocks of the Capital One Cup third round, as they defeated Premier League Everton 2-1 at Elland Road.
The visitors came into the clash on good form, but boss David Moyes decided to make six changes to his team and it showed.
Leeds struck in just the fourth minute of the game. Full-back Aidan White strode forward past a few half-hearted Everton challenges and then found a superb finish past stand-in Toffee’s keeper Jan Mucha.
The home side were two goals up in the 70th minute. Jamaican midfielder Rudolph Austin got a touch on Danny Pugh’s goal bound effort and it was enough to divert the ball past Mucha in the Toffee’s goal.
Everton got a goal back through a Sylvain Distin header with ten minutes to go, but the home side held on for a deserved victory.
English champions Manchester City lost 4-2 at home to Aston Villa after extra time. The home side took the lead through Mario Balotelli in the first half, before former-Villa star Gareth Barry put past his own keeper to equal the scores up in the second half.
Full-back Alexander Kolarov scored to give City the lead again. However, with 20 minutes to go Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor struck to give Villa an equaliser. The game then went into extra-time. Early on in extra-time Villa winger Charles N-Zogbia put the visitors into the lead for the first time and in the second half of extra-time Villa clinched the tie with a second goal from Agbonlahor.
