In the early kick-off on Sunday, Reading and QPR drew 0-0 at the Madejski Stadium.
The draw means that both teams will be playing Championship football next season. In truth this game summed-up why the teams have struggled so badly this season.
QPR’s mercurial Adel Taarabt missed a string of chances in both halves of the game.
The game was low on quality, even if it was high on effort. Both clubs will now concentrate on building for next season.
Elsewhere, Chelsea moved up to third in the Premier League table, with a 2-0 victory over Swansea at Stamford Bridge. The Blues took the lead on 43 minutes. Frank Lampard found Brazilian midfielder Oscar, who fired across the goal inside the far post.
The home side doubled their lead in injury-time. Leon Britton brought down Juan Mata in the penalty area and Frank Lampard scored from the resulting spot kick. The veteran midfielder is now just one short of Bobby Tamblin’s club goalscoring record. Lampard is now on 201 goals for the club.
In the late kick-off, Arsenal and Manchester United drew 1-1 at the Emirates Stadium, as expected former-Gunners star Robin van Persie had a say in the outcome. The home side came out the traps the quicker and took the lead after just two minutes.
Tomas Rosicky played a ball through the Arsenal defence to Theo Walcott, who cut in from the wing, advanced and fired low into the net, via the hand of David de Gea. Replays showed that the England ace was offside when he received the ball.
It was almost inevitable that Van Persie would have a say in this game and that say came just before the interval. The Dutchman was brought down in the penalty area by Bacary Sagna and stepped-up to score the penalty himself.
The draw leaves the Gunners fourth, two points ahead of Tottenham in the race for the Champions League spots, but Spurs have a game in-hand on their rivals.
