Manchester City came back from a goal down to defeat Tottenham 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium in Sunday’s early kick-off.

Former-City striker Emmanuel Adebayor was a constant threat to the champion’s defence, after being selected ahead of Jermain Defoe in the lone striker role by Andre Villas-Boas.

However, Tottenham took the lead through an unlikely source. Spurs centre-back Steven Caulker headed home from Tom Huddlestone free-kick. City keeper Joe Hart fumbled at the ball, before it crossed the line.

The home side had a penalty appeal turned down when William Gallas appealed to handle the ball in the penalty area. Sergio Aguero slipped when through on goal early in the second half, but did hit the target on 65 minutes.

The Argentinian striker finished coolly past Brad Friedel in the Tottenham goal to level the scores. Edin Dzeko headed wide and David Silva shot wide when well placed. However, it was Edin Dzeko who has earned himself a reputation as a super-sub in recent weeks that had the final say.

The Bosnian striker controlled a superb ball from David Silva inside the box to volley past Friedel with just three minutes remaining. The Bosnian international may not like it, but he is developing a reputation as a super-sub.

In the later Premier League fixture, Chelsea and Liverpool drew 1-1 at Stamford Bridge. Liverpool had the majority of possession in the first half, but never looked threatening and it was Chelsea who took the lead in the 20^th minute.

Chelsea captain John Terry powered Juan Mata’s corner past Brad Jones in the Liverpool goal. It went from jubilation to anguish in the 35^th minute when the centre-back had to be stretchered off after a collision with Luis Suarez.

Chelsea missed chances and were made to pay for their profligacy in the 73^rd minute. Man of the moment Luis Suarez was on hand to head home from close range to earn the visitors a point.
