Sunday’s Premier League games produced just one goal between the two games.

The early kick-off was at Anfield, where Liverpool drew 0-0 with local rivals Everton. The game was a typically physical encounter with tackles flying in.

For all the effort though, there was little inspiration. Steven Gerrard had an effort blocked by Everton centre-back Phil Jagielka.

Marouane Fellaini also turned an effort wide of the post in a first half that lacked much goalmouth action.

The big talking point of the game came in the second half, as Sylvain Distin headed home from a corner to send the visiting fans wild, only for Michael Oliver to rule out the goal. Replays showed it was a harsh decision. Reds keeper Pepe Reina tripped over near Everton forward Victor Anichebe, but Nigerian international was not impeding the Spaniard.

In the end, a draw was probably a fair result for both sides. The draw keeps Everton five points ahead of their city rivals with just two games remaining this season.

Elsewhere, Chelsea strengthened their bid for a Champions League place with a 1-0 victory at champions Manchester United. The first half was a similar story to the one at Anfield. Few chances, but Demba Ba did head over the bar for the visitors, while Robin van Persie fired wide of the goal when well-placed for United.

Just as it looked as though the game would end goalless, Chelsea struck with three minutes remaining. The Blues broke quickly, Juan Mata fired a low shot towards goal that deflected off United defender Phil Jones and beat David de Gea in the home goal.

Two minutes later United were reduced to ten men. Brazilian full-back Rafael kicked compatriot David Luiz near the corner flag and after a slight melee involving a number of players Howard Webb produced a red card for the young full-back.

The victory means that Chelsea could clinch a Champions League spot if they beat rivals Tottenham at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.
