Manchester United moved to the top of the Premier League table with a 3-1 home win over QPR yesterday.
United looked in control of the first half, but it was the visitors that went closest to scoring in the first half, Jamie Mackie having a goal disallowed for offside.
In fact it was the visitors that drew first blood in the 52nd minute. Kieron Dyer’s cross was parried by Anders Lindegaard and Mackie was on hand to score from close-range. The home side were level on 64 minutes through a close-range effort from centre-back Jonny Evans.
Four minutes later and United were ahead. Wayne Rooney’s corner was headed home by midfielder Darren Fletcher. United made the points look safe in the 72nd minute. Anderson found Javier Hernandez, who raced onto the pass before firing past Julio Cesar.
The victory took Manchester United back to the top of the Premier League. New QPR boss Harry Redknapp will be encouraged by his team’s performance, despite their defeat.
Elsewhere, West Brom continued their good start to the season with a 4-2 victory at Sunderland. The Baggies took the lead through a superb curling effort from midfielder Zoltan Gera. Just before half-time West Brom were two goals to the good.
Shane Long scored a tap-in after Sunderland keeper Simon Mignolet made a terrible error fumbling at the feet of the Irish striker.
Sunderland were back in the game in the 73rd minute. Substitute Craig Gardner’s free-kick took a deflection and found the net. West Brom regained their lead in the 81st minute; substitute Romelu Lukaku scoring from the penalty spot.
Sunderland didn’t give up though and scored a second goal in the 87th minute through Stephane Sessegnon from close-range. However, maximum points were secured in injury-time with substitute Marc-Antoine Fortune scoring with a cool finish.
The victory moved West Brom up to third place in the Premier League table. Sunderland are now 16th in the Premier League table.
