English champions Manchester City drew 2-2 with Dutch champions Ajax at the Etihad Stadium in the Champions League last night.

The big spending English side are now bottom of Group D with just two points from their first four games in Europe’s elite competition.

Comeback

Manchester City were two goals down with less than 20 minutes on the clock. Highly-rated attacker Siem de Jong had shocked the home crowd with a brace and it looked like the away side were about to cause a major shock in Manchester.

City came back through goals from Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure. There was controversy as Aguero had a goal disallowed in the second half. Controversial Italian striker Mario Balotelli also had a penalty appeal turned down in the dying seconds of the match, much to the disappointment of City’s fans and players.

Unlikely

It now looks unlikely that the Citizens will qualify for the knockout stages, after Real Madrid and Dortmund also drew 2-2 at the Bernabeu. City still have to face Jose Mourinho’s Spanish champions at the Etihad Stadium, before a tough trip to Germany to face Dortmund in the their group game.

Unhappy

The draw puts City boss Roberto Mancini under increasing pressure. The Italian will be unhappy that his side conceded two early goals, which in the end cost his team points. The former-Inter boss was also unhappy with some of the officials decisions.

However, it’s the City players that he should be unhappy with. They have underperformed in the Champions League this season and it looks as though those poor performances will see the club exit the competition. An early Champions League exit may just signal an exit for the under-pressure City boss.
