Champions League — 21 August 2013

PSV Eindhoven AC MilanYesterday the first matches of the Champions League play-offs were played. There were some surprises which made the day even more interesting. The first match was played late afternoon and resulted in the first surprise as Scottish Champions, Celtic, lost 2-0 against the Champions of Kazakhstan, Shakhter Karagandy. Shakhter Karagandy opened the score in the 12th minute and double the lead in the 77th minute. Celtic will have quite a challenge at hand in the second leg to qualify to the group stage of the Champions League.

Later on, in the evening, another four matches were played. In a match that represented French against Spanish football Lyon surprisingly lost 2-0 at home against Real Sociedad. The French giants conceded goals in the 17th and 50th minute. To add salt into the wound they also had Milan Bisevac sent off in the 75th minute. In another match Russian giants, Zenit Petersburg, won comfortably against Pacos Ferreira. The match ended 4-1 with Zenit taking the lead in the 27th minute. Pacos Ferreira managed to level the match in the 58th minute, only to then concede another three goals. PSV Eindhoven vs AC Milan was a very entertaining match with AC Milan taking the lead in the 15th minute through Stephan El Shaarawy. PSV Eindhoven leveled the match in the 60th minute thanks to a goal by Tim Matavz. The return leg will be decisive in determining who will qualify to the Champions League. In the last match of the day Viktoria Plzen won 3-1 against Maribor. Thanks to an early goal Viktoria Plzen took charge of the game. They managed to double the lead in the 58th minute with Maribor pulling one back in the 66th minute. Viktoria Plzen added a third goal in the 90th minute to boost their chances of qualification significantly.
