FA Cup — 09 March 2013

Wayne Rooney is expected to return to the Manchester United team against ChelseaThe quarter-final of the FA Cup takes place this weekend. The clash of the round takes place on Sunday, as Manchester United host Chelsea at Old Trafford.

A lot of attention will be on England international Wayne Rooney, after the striker was left out of Manchester United’s defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Rooney is expected to start up front for the Red Devils in this clash though. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will now be hoping his side can concentrate on winning the double of FA Cup and Premier League.

Chelsea counterpart Rafa Benitez has come in for heavy criticism since his appointment and a 1-0 defeat at Steaua Bucurest Thursday in the Europa League won’t help the Spaniard win around his doubters.

Elsewhere, Everton will be hoping to make it to the semi-finals of the competition for a second consecutive year, as the Toffee’s host struggling Wigan at Goodison Park on Saturday. Everton were defeated at the semi-final stage of the FA Cup last season by arch-rivals Liverpool and suffered defeat in the 2009 cup final.

Wigan meanwhile has never made it past the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. The Latics have rotated their squad in previous rounds. Latics boss Roberto Martinez has recently admitted that he is likely to do the same with this tie, as the fight for top flight must take priority.

Also on Saturday Premier League champions Manchester City host Championship Barnsley at the Etihad Stadium. The FA Cup is probably City’s best chance of picking up silverware this season, as the Citizens are currently 12 points behind bitter-rivals Manchester United in the race for the title.

The Championship side have claimed just two wins from their last 11 encounters with top flight sides and that record looks unlikely to improve in Manchester.

On Sunday, two Championship clubs in Millwall and Blackburn go head-to-head for a chance to make it through to the last four and a possible tie against of the Premier League big boys.
